Liverpool Revisited is a European funded programme based at the Vauxhall Neighbourhood Council in North Liverpool. The project has one aim which is to develop a robust and sustainable tourism industry within the North Liverpool area.
To achieve the projects’ aim, there are two objectives. The first objective is to capitalise on the opportunities for job creation available in the new high quality retail, leisure and tourism industries leading up to and beyond the Capital of Culture year in 2008. With the City experiencing a period of economic growth it is crucial, for the benefit of North Liverpool, that local people are in a position to secure these jobs as they come available. Working with a whole host of partners including BNENC, Liverpool Lighthouse and The Vocational College, Liverpool Revisited is offering people within the L3, L4, L5, L6 and L20 areas of the City, the chance to gain the training and qualifications to gain jobs within the tourism industry.
The second objective of the project is to develop a tourism strategy that will have a lasting legacy for the area. North Liverpool has a number of assets and attractions such as St Anthony’s Visitor Centre, The Tobacco Warehouse and Liverpool and Everton Football clubs, to name but a few, which have the potential to form the basis of a successful tourism industry. The tourism strategy will work towards mapping the assets of North Liverpool whilst creating and developing local coach tours of historical sites and places of interest. The project also hopes to take advantage of another asset within the area, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Through this, the project will develop barge tours taking in attractions such as the Lock system, historical Dock network and the Eldonian Village.
Working in partnership with Crease Consultancies, Liverpool Revisited is developing a robust and sustainable Tourism Strategy for North Liverpool.
In January 2008 the steering committee along with the strategy consultants will embark on a fact finding barge tour to determine the possible future opportunities that an asset such as the Canal has for the development of tourism. The tour will commence from the Eldonian Village and the barge will work its way down through the locks into the Stanley and Clarence Docks. This route has been chosen due to the number of attractions en route such as the Tobacco Warehouse and Victoria Clock.
The Canal is a huge asset in North Liverpool and it is hoped that such tours could maximise its potential.
